Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 October 2026
Rally Wire ("we", "us", "our") publishes rallywire.co.uk, an independent rally news site and free email newsletter. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, and what rights you have over it. We are the data controller for the personal data described below. Any questions or requests about your data can be sent to us via our contact form or, if the form does not work for you, our submissions form.
What we collect, and why
We collect only what's needed to run the site and the newsletter, plus basic usage statistics so we can see which stories are read. We don't sell your data, and we don't build advertising profiles ourselves — but the site does load Google Analytics and the Google AdSense script on every page; see Cookies and embedded services below.
- Newsletter sign-ups. If you subscribe, the email address you give is passed to and held by our newsletter provider, beehiiv, solely to send you the newsletter. Legal basis: your consent. You can unsubscribe from any issue, which removes your address from future sends.
- News and story submissions. The "Submit news or announcement" button opens a form hosted by Google Forms in a new tab. Anything you submit there (name, role/organisation, email, and the details of your submission) is collected directly by Google on our behalf and is used to review and, where relevant, report your story. Legal basis: your consent, given by submitting the form.
- Correspondence and the contact form. If you contact the newsdesk — including through the contact form on our About page — we receive your name, email address and message and keep that correspondence to respond to you and to keep a record of the exchange. The form delivers messages to our editor's inbox using Cloudflare's email service, and the message we receive also includes the country your connection appears to come from. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in dealing with your enquiry.
- Spam protection. The contact form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. Turnstile only loads when you start filling in the form, and Cloudflare receives technical signals such as your IP address and browser details to make that judgement. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the form free of spam. To limit abuse we also keep your IP address in a message counter for up to an hour (it then expires automatically). See the Cloudflare privacy policy.
- Site analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to measure
how the site is used: which pages are viewed, how visitors arrive, roughly where they are
and what kind of device and browser they use. It runs on every page and sets cookies in
your browser (typically named
_gaand_ga_…). Google processes this data for us. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site. You can opt out with Google's browser add-on or by blocking Google Analytics in your browser. - Standard server logs. Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) may briefly log your IP address, browser, and the pages you request, for security and troubleshooting purposes. These logs are not used to build a profile of you. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and working.
Cookies and embedded services
Rally Wire's own servers set no cookies. Third-party services used on the site may set their own. Two of them load only after you agree (the newsletter widget and YouTube videos), and two load on every page without asking (Google Analytics and the Google AdSense script). The cookie banner's Accept / Reject choice controls only the first two.
- Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) loads on every page, sets first-party cookies and sends usage data to Google; see "Site analytics" above and the Google privacy information. This is not controlled by the cookie banner.
- Google AdSense (Google LLC): the AdSense script loads on every page. It is used to verify the site with Google AdSense and, if advertising is enabled for the site, may show ads and set cookies. This is not controlled by the cookie banner either.
The newsletter widget and YouTube videos load only after you agree. Google Fonts loads on every page but sets no cookie:
- The newsletter sign-up widget on this site is provided by beehiiv, Inc., and loading it may set a cookie on their domain. It only loads if you click Accept on the cookie banner shown on your first visit. If you click Reject instead, the widget never loads — you can still subscribe via a plain link that opens beehiiv's page directly, which sets no cookie on rallywire.co.uk. You can change your choice at any time via the "Cookie settings" link in the site footer or next to the newsletter box. See the beehiiv privacy policy.
- Event pages with video coverage show a thumbnail and play button, not a live video player. Nothing loads from YouTube (Google LLC) until you press play on a specific video — that action embeds YouTube's player for that clip, which sets cookies on their domain. If you haven't already accepted cookies via the banner, pressing play shows a one-line notice first and asks you to confirm before the video loads. See the Google privacy policy.
- Page fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests font files directly from Google's servers (this can expose your IP address to Google, but sets no cookie) — see the Google privacy policy.
Your accept/reject choice is remembered in your browser's local storage, not a cookie — it never leaves your device and we don't see it. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site works without them.
Who we share data with
We don't sell or rent your personal data. It's shared only with the service providers named above (beehiiv for the newsletter, Google for form submissions, analytics and the AdSense script, Cloudflare for hosting, email delivery and spam protection), each acting as a processor or as their own controller for the data they collect directly, and only to the extent needed to provide those services.
International transfers
beehiiv, Google and Cloudflare are US-based companies, so data you give them may be processed outside the UK. They rely on recognised safeguards for international transfers (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) under UK data protection law.
How long we keep data
Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Submission and correspondence data is kept for as long as reasonably needed for editorial follow-up, and no longer than necessary. Server logs are held only briefly by our hosting provider.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it (access);
- ask us to correct inaccurate data (rectification);
- ask us to delete your data, e.g. by unsubscribing (erasure);
- object to, or ask us to restrict, certain processing;
- ask for your data in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent.
To exercise any of these, get in touch via our contact form or, if the form does not work for you, our submissions form. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
Children
This site isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site develops. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date at the top of the page.
